Verey Lane

Verey Lane initially documented as a private road on title approx. 1956.

It is believed to be named after the late Mr. Harold Verey, a former businessman from Morwell.

Over the years, Verey Lane has been mentioned multiple times in council records, usually with the recurring theme of being unavailable for public access despite its private road reference on title.

Inconsistencies by the responsible authorities, who include the Shire of Morwell, Latrobe Shire, and Latrobe City Council, and their handling and management of Verey Lane over the many years.

The Shire of Morwell attempted to resolve the landlocked nature of Verey Lane by purchasing the easement of carriageway, from the owner of the day, the then SECV, for $6,000.00 together with additional costs of approximately $1,000.00 and this was finalised in November
1984, this was in line with the original subdivision (LP138926), which was approved in 1982 for 24, 26, and 28 Buckley Street, to enable public access via Collins Street to the rear of these properties.

The introduction of the Road Management Bill, saw the inclusion of Verey Lane in the Latrobe City Council Road Register as a Non-Maintained Road (RDMC0) with Latrobe City Council as the responsible authority effective from November 15, 2004.

Council staff, continued to repeatedly misinformed council and public record by stating that Verey Lane was “NOT currently listed on Council Road register” these can be found April 2011 (CM343), March 2012 (CM370), and May 2012 (CM375).

These facts are important, as when Latrobe City Council sought to declare Verey Lane a “Public Highway”, by not admitting the facts to legal counsel, of which the primary point being that it was indeed on the Road Register since 2004 and under private title since 1956 Common Law.
